Grindhouse

Over the Easter long weekend, I watched Grindhouse with my bro, and it was great. It had zombies, hot girls, senseless gratuitous violence, and tons of cameos.

The trailers were also one of the best parts of the double-feature.

"Don't" was definitely my favourite. You'll understand once you see the movie(s).

Of course this got me in a pro-Quentin kind of mood, which resulted in me buying a Jackie Brown DVD. Unfortunately that was a let-down. 2.5 hours of fairly boring swear-encrusted triviality. I think I must be missing something since I didn't see the blaxploitation movies that this one pays homage to.

Smokin' Aces Review

I had the bewildering experience of watching Smokin' Aces tonight, and I have to say it was a try-hard failure. It was bad enough that I have to compare it to Ultraviolet in the way that it tries to get by with style without substance.

It has all the trappings of a cult Quentin Tarantino movie, what with all the super saturated colours, odd camera angles, bizarre ensemble of ultra violent characters, and tons of gratuitous gore. Still, it fails on many levels.

First, it lacks the black-humour that Quentin sticks in his flicks periodically to relieve the audience of stress before the next gore-fest. Secondly, it has a completely incoherent plot, that when understood, doesn't really make any sense at all anyway. It's all an excuse to see what happens when a dozen different crazy thugs all try to grab a drugged magician turned gangster boss for a chance at a million bucks.

If I had expected this kind of movie, perhaps I wouldn't have been so disappointed. Unfortunately the previews led me to believe this would be a fun and at times exciting B grade action-comedy, something along the lines of The Big Hit, Pulp Fiction, or Lock-Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Bottom line, rent if interested.

Published at The Game Chair

I finally have my first article publised at The Game Chair website. I cover the game "Indigo Prophecy" in a progressive review where you read along as I play through my first 6 hour session.

I have two more coming as I make my way through to the end of the game, I'll make a link here as those are published as well.

Last night I saw "Ultraviolet", and let me save you a lot of time and money by telling you how craptacular it is. It's very craptacular, don't watch it. There, my public service duties are fulfilled.

One of the most annoying features is that there was a permanent "blur" filter applied to her face, no matter what. You could barely see her nose, I felt like the projector wasn't in focus or something.

Just look at Rotten Tomatoes... they give it a 4% score. Is there anything more rotten than that?

A choice quote (of many): "The violence is presented in such a childish fashion, that it has all the impact of a Pokemon battle."

Don't even watch it for the action. Check out my summary of a representative action scene in the movie: Milla is surrounded by 20 cyber-ninjas clad in black, she is obviously out-numbered, and they all have their guns pointed at her head. The camera zooms in on her ear, and we hear a loud "snikkkt" noise. The camera zooms out, and all 20 ninjas are lying on the ground with bloody wounds. /golf-clap

I think the best way to tell if a movie sucks or not is to wait outside the movie theatre doors of the respective movie you wish to check out. When people leave, try to listen whether or not people are saying things like "I'll never get those 2 hours of my life back", because that's something I heard when people were leaving the movie last night.
