Contact - Final Review

I have posted my
final review for Contact at The Game Chair. I finished the game last week but my other work (and Resident Evil 4 - damn is that work of art amazing) has kept me from writing this up. I'll be returning Contact by mail shortly, and receiving another treat soon hopefully.

Contact - Review #2

I think I'm nearly finished Contact. At least the characters in the game have told me that I only have one more cell to collect. But interdimensional baddies don't usually make that last task easy, so we'll see.
You can
take a look at my second review on The Game Chair.
It has started to impress me, and bring a smile to my face occasionally, but for an RPG the plot isn't anything impressive. I guess it does break quite a few of
these RPG cliches though.

Contact

I published
my first progressive review on this quirky RPG title from
Grasshopper Manufacture (makers of Killer7 - another fantastically bizarre game).
From their site:
"Hakase(a professor)" is looking for energy source called "Element". What a coincidence! He made the first contact with "you" who bought NINTENDO DS gamesoft "contact" . Your result makes "Cherry(a hero of this game)" grow up. You watch the destiny of this world through the DS, and make Cherry grows up!.
It has been a lot of fun so far, although I know I haven't got far enough to really evaluate the meat of the game. After I'm done playing for 6 hours or so I think I'll return it and try something else if I haven't been totally hooked. One thing that annoys me though is the Wi-Fi functionality. They have some cool features that only work if you have a bunch of friends that also have the game. Perhaps I don't have enough friends?
Anyway, thank goodness for Game Access, without my mail-delivery game rental service I don't think I'd be able to afford to be a reviewer.

Club House Games - Final Play
The last in my series of progressive reviews regarding "Club House Games" has been published on
The Game Chair. Take a
look here for the stellar conclusion.
Also, has
this also scarred anyone else's childhood?

Mario Hoops 3 on 3 - Final Play

Games often take many approaches to maintain the interest of the player. They can capture the player’s attention with a compelling storyline, hook the player into collecting trinkets and unlocking secrets, and present the player with the satisfying challenge of mastery. Mario Hoops 3 on 3 forgoes the storyline, and pursues both of the other options.

full and final review of Mario Hoops 3 on 3 at The Game Chair.
Speaking of games, a cadre of carefully selected individuals will soon be uniting to compete for "The Great Canadian Videogame Competition". Stay tuned for more on that story as it develops.

The Game Chair - Published x 2

I recently published two new progressive reviews on
The Game Chair. First,
a look at Clubhouse Games as mentioned in my last post. Second,
another take at Mario Hoops 3 on 3.
I find that writing for The Game Chair lets me have a creative outlet, and it is good practice for to create an essay of sorts. When was the last time that you wrote an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion?

Clubhouse Games - Nintendo DS

I picked up another game for my Nintendo DS this week, it's called Clubhouse Games, and it's packed to the brim with classic gameplay.
Since I have an
in depth review for this up on The Game Chair, I won't waste your time or mine by re-writing it here. I'll summarize however and say that it is very fun, it's playable online, and it's great to re-learn how to play some of the classics I used to enjoy. Which is great because last time I tried to play a game of Asshole with Derelict and Lobo, we ended up accidentally playing some bastard love child of Hearts and President.
It's not all card games though, you can play billiards, go bowling, and play board games like checkers and chess too.
Check out
this 30 second video on YouTube for a taste of it.
EDIT: I just found
this video for another DS game on YouTube, and it looks like it'll be pretty cool. All I can say is "What a...?"

AND for the people over in Korea...
FREE HUGS! You don't have to test any more nukes, we love you guys. Spread love not fear. Just keep it safe so you don't spread anything else, like nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3

As one of the perks of working as a reviewer and game journalist for The Game Chair, I received a free preview copy of Mario Hoops 3-on-3 for Nintendo DS.
I played through and posted my first "Progressive Review" on The Game Chair's website, you can
read it here.
It is a very cool game, and the method of input is so intuitive and cool. You don't use any of the buttons on the face of the DS, you just tap and scratch around on the touchpad to perform a variety of moves. I'll see if I can convince Beav to pick it up so we can face off this weekend in Cambridge.

Why I Game

At just a few xxx's shy of thirty, I’m lucky enough to have enjoyed the challenge and thrill of electronic gaming for twenty-something years. For those who haven’t played, or for those that haven’t thought about their own attraction to gaming, it is an intriguing question: Why do I game?
Sometimes I game for the promise of escape. I can focus on the artificial challenges at hand and temporarily suspend more complicated troubling thoughts brought about by the challenges of reality. Through gaming, I can experience worlds, choices, and abilities in a dynamic and interactive way that is not possible in other mediums.
Alternatively I game for the social interaction. When I was in school, playing multi-player games at a LAN party or huddled around a game console was a great bonding experience. We developed our own “house rules” for Street Fighter II, and learned each other’s gaming personalities. Having moved away from my hometown after University to pursue a career, I left behind friends and family with no more Super Smash Brothers battles to look forward to. However, thanks to the Internet I am able to continue to play, interact, and bond with my peers through online PC and DS games.
Ultimately I believe that gaming allows me to enjoy the satisfaction of mastery. From the time that I start studying the game manual and learning the basics of the game I enjoy learning and preparing for the challenge to come. As I make my way through the peaks and valleys of the learning curve my mind starts to imagine possible strategies and synthesize feedback from the game. Finally when the game neither presents further mysteries nor challenges, I can relax and bask in the feeling of accomplishment.
Update - The group musing from The Game Chair featuring my "Why I Game" article among others is now live.

The Game Chair - SiN Episode 1 Final Play

I have
published my second and last progressive review on the computer game "SiN Episode 1: Emergence" over at
The Game Chair. It isn't as deep and compelling as Half Life 2, but it is a fun action game to waste some time in while blasting everything that moves.
Check out the review if you want to see what my final impressions of it were.
But what really rang my gong recently was
this preview (YouTube) for an insane (as in "Oh SHI~! Did I just divide by zero?!") game by Valve called "Portal".

Published at The Game Chair - 2nd Review

I successfully had
my second review for "Indigo Prophecy" published at
The Game Chair this morning. Check it out and feel free to leave comments there so that they can tell that some people actually read my stuff. Make me feel good or something eh?
Update on Aquafina: I spoke with Health Canada and the CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency), they want to obtain my bottle (which I still have in my fridge) and examine it. I want to know what the heck I ingested that made me sick for 2 days, and hopefully it isn't anything too serious. Or at least anything that would have long lasting effects.
Meanwhile, I'm busy with several customer pre-sales engagements and so I must cut my post off right... here.

Published at The Game Chair

I finally have
my first article publised at
The Game Chair website. I cover the game "Indigo Prophecy" in a progressive review where you read along as I play through my first 6 hour session.
I have two more coming as I make my way through to the end of the game, I'll make a link here as those are published as well.
Last night I saw "
Ultraviolet", and let me save you a lot of time and money by telling you how
craptacular it is. It's
very craptacular, don't watch it. There, my public service duties are fulfilled.

One of the most annoying features is that there was a permanent "blur" filter applied to her face, no matter what. You could barely see her nose, I felt like the projector wasn't in focus or something.
Just look at
Rotten Tomatoes... they give it a 4% score. Is there anything more rotten than that?
A choice quote (of many):
"The violence is presented in such a childish fashion, that it has all the impact of a Pokemon battle."Don't even watch it for the action. Check out my summary of a representative action scene in the movie: Milla is surrounded by 20 cyber-ninjas clad in black, she is obviously out-numbered, and they all have their guns pointed at her head. The camera zooms in on her ear, and we hear a loud "snikkkt" noise. The camera zooms out, and all 20 ninjas are lying on the ground with bloody wounds. /golf-clap
I think the best way to tell if a movie sucks or not is to wait outside the movie theatre doors of the respective movie you wish to check out. When people leave, try to listen whether or not people are saying things like "I'll never get those 2 hours of my life back", because that's something I heard when people were leaving the movie last night.

The Game Chair

This is not the
(ultimate) game chair that you are looking for.
This is
the game chair that you are looking for. I have signed up to be a game blogger / reviewer / muser at "
The Game Chair", a progressive video game website that attempts to cover gaming in a more mature and innovative way. How so?
Well, in terms of maturity, most of the contributors have a solid set of game experience, and tend not to over hype games. The cool part, however, is the fresh way they review games in what they call "
progressive reviews". The reviewer immerses you into his first crack at the game and you follow his narrative as he guides you through his experiences and impressions from start to finish. I find that this technique best captures the (
sometimes emotional,
sometimes adrenaline filled) journey one takes when playing a great game.
So in my own shameless plug, you can see my
game chair profile for yourself.
What games would make your list of "
memorable experiences" or "
just add friends"?
Am I the only one with "
ninja fantasies"?
