The Game Chair - SiN Episode 1 Final Play

I have published my second and last progressive review on the computer game "SiN Episode 1: Emergence" over at The Game Chair. It isn't as deep and compelling as Half Life 2, but it is a fun action game to waste some time in while blasting everything that moves.

Check out the review if you want to see what my final impressions of it were.

But what really rang my gong recently was this preview (YouTube) for an insane (as in "Oh SHI~! Did I just divide by zero?!") game by Valve called "Portal".

the other game you reviewed sounding a lot more intriguing...what's different about this?

Basically the only "cool" part of it is the very dynamic level of challenge. It keeps you in the sweet spot - it isn't too easy or too hard for very long. If you're doing too good, then it ramps up the level of difficulty. If you're doing too poorly, then it makes things easier on you.

I did find that part pretty neat.

All told, for $20 it wasn't a bad deal.

While that Portal Game does indeed look very cool, playing it would probably cause my head to explode. I'm still wrapping my head around realistic physics, and now I have to deal with Portals?

Games are complex enough without the introduction of quantum mechanics.

ah, the portal thing looks wicked...

but at some point, it must break down.

I think games are getting to the point where I'd rather just think about how cool they are, rather than play them.

Yeah, that portal game looks great. I agree with Cibbuano somewhat, though. When I go to play a game these days, I'm more looking for just straight-up action. Games are almost getting too complicated.

One game that I really liked, that was super simple, was Serious Sam. It was just lots of monsters with cool weapons and simple, but well designed levels.

I don't mind a bit of complexity to some of my games, but I like my FPS's to be mindless hose-fests for the most part (Deus Ex comes to mind as a notible exception).

While I'm whinging about everything: I'm not sure how I feel about all of this "epidoic content". It seems like you are paying less money, but getting a lot less game. I heard that Half-Life 2: Episode 1, while very good, contains a mere 4 hours of gameplay.

My instict is just to wait for all of the episodes, then get the Platinum Pack or whatever.

Amen.

When y'all posted that video of the Spore game, I was like, MANTHATISSOCOOL!!

But I immediately realized that the chances of me buying that game were 0%.

I'm waiting for the Wii to come out, so I can buy a cheap cheap GameCube. I'm like five years behind on all that stuff.

At least with computer games, just the struggle to get the game running is sometimes enough to turn me off. I'm seriously going to need to wait until I buy a new system to properly play HL2.

I'll probably buy one of the next gen consoles once they're not outrageously expensive.

HL2 rules BTW. I got it today.

Yeah, I know, I was super impressed with the gameplay and graphics, etc., but no matter what I did I always get a glitch or lag every minute or so. Back in the day I would have put up with it, but by now I would have hoped stuff like that would be something of the past.

ben, I'm with you on that. Spore makes me excited on a cellular level, but am I going to buy it? Buy a computer that can play it?

More likely, the Beav will buy it, talk about how good it is, and we'll all go 'cooooool...'

I'm still playing Fallout 2 and it still rocks. I slept with Mrs. Bishop and I sucked, so she didn't tell me the safe combination. I'll go back and sleep with her again after I've gotten the Kama Sutra Master Perk.

How good does that sound??

It sounds... malignant.

Comitting cyber fornication can land you in cyber hell, where cyber deamons poke you in the butt with cyber hellcocks.

I'm still waiting for StarCraft to get cheap enough. (I.E. $5 at the bargain bin at WalMart.)

NINTENDO4EVER.
