Bruce Peninsula - Tobermory

This weekend I went off to visit the Bruce Peninsula (Tobermory to be specific - Google Map link here) with some of my Japanese friends and I had a great time.

It was a long drive up to Tobermory (about 6 hours) and I managed to miss a couple turn-offs but we made it in time to book a ferry ride to Flowerpot Island (famous for its pair of large flowerpot like rock formations - one pictured above) and hike a couple trails in the Bruce National Park.

Unfortunately being the long weekend, every single cottage, motel and hotel within 2 hours by car was booked solid. I managed to get a couple rooms at a motel in Walkerton called the "Hillside Motel". The good news: the price was $60 / night. The bad news: the rooms were the dirtiest, nastiest, most pathetic excuse for accomodation that I have had the displeasure of experiencing. The sheets were caked in dirt/mud (at least that's what I hope it was), riddled with quarter sized holes, and housed a couple creepy-crawlies. I stuffed my pillow inside a t-shirt, threw the sheets off the bed, and tried to manage.

The next morning we headed back to Tobermory, took the ferry to the island, and hiked around. Made of fossilized coral beds the island has some very interesting rock formations, including caves, cliffs, and man-made rock statues (which I took some pleasure in taking part in).

After returning to Tobermory, we all tried the local whitefish, which was pretty good.

Getting back turned out to be the real killer. 7 hours of driving later, I was back in my own bed.

you just make Japanese friends wherever you go?

No, sometimes Chinese or Korean. Do you think I'd discriminate?

To be honest, these days I'm hanging out with one Japanese guy inparticular and the rest of the group are his friends.

It's hard to make a plan with my coworkers because of our work schedules. The Japanese guy is an international student with a much more flexible schedule so it's much easier to hang out with him.

Sounds like a fun trip. Walkerton....hope you didn't drink the water :-) Or is this a different Walkerton?

It is the SAME Walkerton...

And no, I didn't drink the water, but I *did* brush my teeth with it.

I got a sore throat the next day.

Coincidence?

Of course, one could also point a dirty finger at the motel.

The cheapest hotel I stayed in was up in Radium. Kirsten and I were travelling through BC, before we did the whole europe thing.

It was 25$ a night.

Now, when you spend 25$ a night on a hotel room, you kind of expect to wake up being spooned by a giant cockroach, a hobo, or perhaps a giant cockroach that does a bit of hoboing on the side.

To our shock, the room was clean, the shower was hot, the beds were comfy. It wasn't the Ritz, but damn, I've paid a hell of a lot more for a hell of a lot less.

yeah, I've discovered that paying extra for a room doesn't translate in a better room. You might as well just lay down in the mud and have a good night's sleep.

CanadianAttackBeaver...I think I stayed at the same one a couple of years ago. Was it the one at the very south end of Radium? Little rooms but clean.

Hmm, that sounds about right. It was well off the main drag, I['m not sure how far or what direction though. I do remember the rooms being small too.

It wasn't much to look at from the outside either, but it was still nice and cheap.

Why do you identify your friends by their cultual/racial background? This may not be as easy a question as "Why do you game?". I like that you are getting out to see things with friends. Bed bugs bite.

I refer to them by their nationality, not ethnicity/culture; and this is only because they are foreign visitors to Canada. I don't refer to my Canadian friends by their ethnicity, but I do refer to them as my "Canadian friends" in order to avoid confusion.

This is because I have two groups of friends: Canadian friends (people who read this blog) and foreign friends (mostly Japanese, who read my Japanese blog).

Just as I may refer to my "highschool friends" and my "Computing Science friends" and my "coworker friends", I'm trying to explain which circle of friends I am referring to.
