The River Gambler
Last night I went out on "The River Gambler" to enjoy the view and learn some Salsa! I have a couple moves down now, and I'm definitely interested in taking up some lessons. There were some latin guys there totally kicking ass. I never really appreciated how cool salsa is.The fact is. in Alberta, we were not exposed to dances like this. No, we learned traditional western (country) and Canadian (french-country) dances instead.
Awkward looks and sweaty palms (some girls' hands were the clammiest, wettest things) were unfortunate parts of the forced juniour-high dancing experience, but the school dances weren't much better. Tons of wallflowers, and "dancing" really consisted of stepping left and then stepping right. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a girl a couple feet in front of you. It wasn't really dancing until the slow songs played... and then you'd be able to take it easy.
One thing that you learned quite quickly however is that you had to be careful about who you chose to dance with for those slow songs. Especially if the song in question was "November Rain" by Guns n' Roses. That song went on FOREVER! And "Stairway to Heaven" also I think.
I imagine that the youth of today are have a much better dancing experience...
Getting back on track, my education led me to know how to polka, doh-see-doh, square dance, sashay, line dance, "chicken dance", etc. I guess I did learn how to do swing also, but that was the only dance that was cool. But we never learned the hot dances like Salsa!
Lead the lady, spice up your salsa, and destroy the dance-floor!
Assuming that your city has the latin clubs that play salsa... you just have to go.

I am sure that salsa's cool now, but can you imagine trying to tell a bunch of 13-year-olds to shake their hips?
I think the dances we learned as kids aren't un-cool because they're old-fashioned, but because they aren't sexualized the way other (ie. most/cooler/modern/latin) dances are.
Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the salsa!
I got tired of the salsa thing... there are too many try-hard guys that make it a competitive sport, almost.
I took salsa dancing lessons a couple times, but to be honest, I'm pretty awkward when it comes to these couple dances. Lots of really attractive women seem to be into it, though.
How was the date otherwise?
Well I danced twice and watched the rest of the time. It was more interesting watching the other people dance, especially the "good" people.
There was a "rubbin" floor as well, but I didn't really like that one as much. The DJ was making eyes at me.
Yeah, the salsa tryhardism is BS, though on the other hand, it would be sweet to be a tryhardist--except not look like a tryhardist... if I could pull it off.
Ole!
I like salsa, especially on nachos.
Back in my day the slow song of the times was Love Hurts by Nazareth, Beth by Kiss. Those are two that I remember.
that's why latin guys rock those joint. They're amazing, but they don't look like they're trying to be amazing. Meanwhile, Canadian engineers are memorizing moves and measuring the exact angle at which to catch her hand.
